GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Dan Hextra is a member of Grand Rapids Team World Vision, an organization focused on making a difference in the lives and drinking water of others, step by step.
“Recognizing the blessing that has been given to us,” says Dan, “and hopefully such an attitude towards trying to give back.”
This blessing is pure, readily available water, which, according to Dan, some were not so lucky.
“Seven hundred million people don’t have access to clean water,” he says, “and they constantly have to walk and … walk miles and miles and hope the water is clean.”
This fall, he will be one of many who will run a half marathon with the personal goal of raising $ 15,000 for the cause.
“It’s nice to be in shape and feel in shape, but knowing you have it, you know, there’s a main reason for it,” Dan tells us. “And part of the reason for that is raising awareness.”
But on National World Water Day there is an even bigger goal for all sections of Team World Vision together.
“We are committed and believe we can reach the $ 1.5 million goal raised in one day on clean water for 30,000 people,” said Team World Vision Director Mallory Wood. She says the organization has spent most of its work in Africa and Central America, helping to provide clean water through wells, drilling rigs and solar pumps.
All donations from Tuesday will be matched to help reach their numbers … and more people in need.
“We keep asking people who are our friends and family members to donate, to be there, to be someone who gives money so that someone has clean water for life,” Mallory said.
The team director says $ 50 is all it takes to give one person clean water for life. Although fundraising ends Tuesday night, fundraising continues daily.
