PORTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A pileup on I-96 in Portland has involved more than 50 vehicles and injured people, according to Michigan State Police.

Around 4:40 p.m. Saturday, the Portland Fire Department posted on his Facebook page that he was “working a 50+ vehicle accident” on I-96 near Knox Road in Portland. He advised drivers to avoid the highway.

Around 5:30 p.m. The MSP said all lanes of I-96 in the area will be closed due to the crash. It is not known how long the closure will last. State police estimate 50 to 100 vehicles may be involved.

MSP said there was damage, but it was unclear how severe it was.

The MSP said the accident was caused by a white paint which has since disappeared.
