Former first lady Michelle Obama revealed why she waited until she left the White House to braid her hair.
On the first stop of her nationwide book tour, Obama said Tuesday (Nov. 15) that she decided to keep her hair straight because the country was “just getting used to” having a black family in the White House when her husband was elected in 2012 . , A hill reports.
“They tripped when Barack put on a tan suit,” quipped Obama while promoting her new book The Light We Carry at the Warner Theater in Washington. “The great shame, the scandal of the Obama administration.”
Obama then recreated what she believed would be the backlash if she wore braids while in the White House.
“Remember when she wore braids? These are terrorist braids! These are revolutionary braids!”
“Let me keep my hair straight,” Obama continued. “Let’s skip health care.”
Obama said she sometimes jokingly annoyed her team by mentioning that she wanted to change her appearance.
“I would also worry my staff. I was thinking, ‘I was thinking about braiding,'” said the author of “The Light We Carry.”
She touched on the dilemma many black women face in the workplace.
“The code of ethics in the workplace, as black women, we deal with it, it’s all about, do you show up with natural hair?” Obama said.
Now, nearly six years after her husband’s presidency ended, Obama showed off her tresses at the start of her book tour, which was moderated by Ellen Degeneres.
“Braids, well!” Obama said Tuesday to applause from the crowd.
