After a big year of changes, including modernization and renewal of the loyalty program 95 dollars– credit card with annual fee, Marriott Bonvoy shakes things up again.

Two new Marriott Bonvoy cards from two issuers

Both cards come with a limited-time new offer for cardholders: “Earn 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy points after you spend $4,000 in qualifying card purchases in the first three months.” Both offer cardholders the following:

  • 6 Marriott Bonvoy points for purchases at participating Marriott hotels.

  • 4X Marriott Bonvoy indicates total purchases of up to $15,000 per year at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets.

  • 2X Marriott Bonvoy Points on all other eligible purchases.

  • 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points for each qualifying stay.

  • Automatic Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status.

  • Free Night Reward (up to 50,000 points) after $15,000 in purchases per year.

  • 15 elite overnight credits each calendar year.

But you may not be eligible for these new cards. According to Marriott, you are not eligible for either card if you received a new bonus on any Marriott card within the last 24 months. Also, you can’t get the AmEx version if you have or had any Chase Marriott card in the past 30 days, and the same rules apply to getting the Chase version if you have or had any AmEx Marriott card.

  • The annual fee increase from $450 to $650 is a 44% jump.

  • Free night award up to 85,000 points annually (was 50,000 points).

  • Up to $300 in statement credit per calendar year (up to $25 per month) on eligible purchases at restaurants worldwide (previously $300 annual credit on eligible purchases at Marriott hotels).

  • Marriott Bonvoy Platinum automatic elite status (previously earned automatic Gold status).

  • 25 elite night credits each calendar year (was 15).

Current cardholders will see the annual fee increase take effect from the date of their next annual renewal, beginning January 1, 2023.

Additionally, for a limited time, new cardholders will receive a welcome offer: “Earn 150,000 Marriott Bonvoy Bonus Points when you spend $5,000 on eligible purchases in the first three months.”

Which Marriott card should I choose?

If you are a fan of Marriott and value elite status, then Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card maybe worth the substantial annual fee. Previously only available when you earn 50 elite nights per year, automatic platinum status offers significant benefits such as complimentary breakfast, room upgrades (including suites), early check-in, late check-out and hotel lounge access -participants. NerdWallet estimates the cost Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Status benefits of about $3,000 a year, depending on how often you stay. The cost of the card will be determined by how you use your annual free night certificate and whether you use card credits for up to $25 in restaurant purchases each month.

Still new Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express Card and Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ Card Boasting flashy welcome offers, their long-term value is lower than other hotel credit cards. Many hotel cards offer a free anniversary party no spending requirements, but these new Marriott Bonvoy cards require you to spend $15,000 on qualifying purchases before you can earn a free night.
