A historic victory comes after a highly contested mayoral race in the nation’s second-largest city between Bass and Rick Caruso, a billionaire who joined the Democratic Party this year and spent nearly $100 million on his campaign. In accordance with HuffPostCaruso outspent Bass seven to one, with most of the funds coming from his personal fortune.

Bass is recognized as one of the country’s most prominent black female politicians, and she ran President Joe Biden a short list of companions for the 2020 election. Bass represented the city of Los Angeles for five terms, winning by a landslide each time.

Bass initially made a name for herself in the 1980s when she successfully obtained millions from the government to fight the crack epidemic in South Los Angeles.

Caruso, her opponent, was a longtime Republican until he registered as a nonpartisan a few years ago. On the eve of announcing his mayoral campaign, Caruso renamed himself a Democrat.

Both candidates have focused their campaigns on discussing their plans to deal with Los Angeles’ growing homelessness crisis and violent crime spike, the concerns of the city’s voters.

Bass is now set to succeed the outgoing mayor Eric Garcettiwho was forced out of office due to term limits.
