The program is looking for 2,600 new seniors to add to its food program

To help reduce the nearly 43 percent of people who are food insecure in southeast Michigan, Focus: HOPE is increasing efforts to expand a monthly meal program for seniors.

“With rising food prices and high electricity costs during the winter, more seniors may need food assistance – and we can help meet that need,” said Focus: HOPE CEO Portia Roberson. “Every month withseniors in Detroit as well as 159 communities can receive a grocery box to fill their pantries with staples.”

In partnership with federal and state agencies, etcTogether with more than 250 community partners, Focus: HOPE distributes food boxes to more than 42,000 seniors each month.

While Focus: HOPE is based in Detroit, the agency serves all communities in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties. This means that residents of Detroit and Highland Park, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Grosse Pointes, Downriver, Taylor and beyond can access food from Focus: HOPE.

Unlike many meal programs that provide single meals; this program aims to replenish pantries for the elderly with products such as milk, cereals and canned goods that can be used throughout the month. “Since our involvement in the Commodity Supplemental Nutrition Program in 1971, we have worked diligently to expand a pilot program for seniors into a permanent, nationwide effort with lasting impact. We are grateful to the USDA and look forward to continuing our legacy to serve our community.” she said.

The contents of the monthly box include:

  • Cheese
  • Milk (eg condensed and/or dry)
  • Pasta/grains (eg spaghetti; rice)
  • Groats or oatmeal
  • Protein
  • Meat (eg, canned beef, canned chicken)
  • Vegetables and soup (eg, green beans; vegetable soup)
  • Fruit (eg fruit smoothie; apricots)
  • Juice (eg grape, apple, orange)
