California police say a person of interest is connected to Monday kidnapping of the Stockton family is in critical condition after attempting to take his own life.
The Merced County Sheriff’s Office announced the abduction of 8-month-old Aruhi Deri on Monday; her 27-year-old mother Jasleen Kaur; her 36-year-old father, Jasdeep Singh; and the child’s uncle, Amandeep Singh, 39.
Authorities on Wednesday identified Jesus Manuel Salgado, 48, as a person of interest in their investigation after he allegedly tried to use one of the victims’ credit cards at an ATM.
“Prior to the involvement of law enforcement agencies, Salgado tried to commit suicide. Salgado is in our custody and is currently being treated and listed in critical condition,” the Sheriff’s Office said in an update on the case Wednesday evening.
on wednesday morning Merced County Detectives received information that one of the vcitims cards was being used at an ATM in Atwater, CA.
Investigators obtained surveillance footage from that location that shows an individual making a transaction that resembles the subject of the video from abduction scene outside a business on southbound California Highway 59 in Merced. That led investigators to Salgado.
The sheriff’s office continues to search for the 8-month-old and her three family members.
Before the family was reported missing, firefighters responded to reports of a truck on fire Monday morning at the intersection of Buhach Road and Oakdale Road in Vinton and discovered it belonged to Amandeep Singh, the child’s uncle. If the authorities and family members could not be reached neither Singh nor his family members are reported missing.
Merced County Sheriff Vernon Warnke announced Monday that there is evidence that investigators believe the suspected kidnapper tried to destroy evidence.
Authorities released photos of the potential suspect wearing a gray sweatshirt with black sleeves and a black hood, a blue surgical mask, dark pants and dark shoes and socks. The suspect is also considered armed and dangerous.
