IONIA COUNTY, Mich. – An 83-year-old woman who was distributing pamphlets was shot in the shoulder after a verbal altercation at an Ionia County home, police said.

State police said the woman was able to drive herself to the Lake Odessa Police Department to report the shooting and get help. She was taken to the hospital, where she was released.

The shooting happened in the afternoon on Tuesday, September 20.

Police did not release an exact location, but said the woman was at the residence and a verbal altercation reportedly took place while she was handing out pamphlets.

Then she was shot in the shoulder.

State police have not released further details about the shooting. Dessant said the investigation is ongoing and the report will be turned over to the Ionia County District Attorney’s Office for review and possible charges.
