JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) – In Patricia Curton’s home, you’ll find photos on the kitchen table and over the fireplace. Each of them tells the story of a heartbreaking tragedy.
“We didn’t have time to grieve for anyone. It’s just an ongoing injury,” Kerton said. “I lost my daughter a mile from me this way, and my granddaughter a mile from me this way.”
Kerton wears a shirt that says “Justice for Zaria”. Police say a 1-year-old child was found dead in a home in Jackson County on Dec. 13. Donald Flack’s trusted friend and babysitter has been charged with first degree murder in Zaria’s death. Police say the cause of death was blunt force trauma.
“We couldn’t help her. She had no voice, Kerton said.
Then, just two days after Zaria’s funeral, the little girl’s mother and Kerton’s daughter, Tera Wilson, died in a car accident.
“I’m just wondering why,” Kerton said.
It comes after three more family members died last year. Kerton says there are no words to describe the pain.
“We are literally drowning emotionally and financially.”
Society does what it can. A Gofundme was set up for the family. Daughter Kirton is doing everything she can to be close to her mom.
“I don’t know the words to tell her. I don’t know what to tell her to try, there’s nothing you can say to make it better,” Kerton’s daughter Ashley Wilson said.
So far, about ten thousand dollars have been collected. Kerton says the support keeps her going.
“My phone is constantly ringing not only with debt collectors, but with people wanting or trying to help.”
For now, she will rely on consultations and relatives.
“There are days when I just want to cover my head in bed and not even move, but I can’t. I just have to keep going and I know that’s what they would want, especially for the kids.”
The suspect in Mariah’s murder is expected to appear before a judge on February 10. There is a link on how you can help the family here.
