PORTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. — More than 50 vehicles were involved in a pileup on I-96 in Ionia County Saturday, according to the Portland Fire Department.

Troopers responded to a pile-up in the eastbound lanes of I-96 between mile markers 73 and 76 in Portland, Michigan State Police said just after 5 p.m. Saturday.
MSP added that around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the westbound side of the freeway was also closed following an additional crash on that side.

Michigan State Police said around 5:45 p.m. that vehicles not involved in the crash could be pulled off the freeway to clear traffic and allow troopers to assist those involved in the crash.

MSP says there is some damage, but none of it appears to be serious. We are working to find out how many people were affected.
A Family Warming and Reunification Center has been set up at the Portland Church of the Nazarene for those involved in the rush.
Buses help get people to the church, located at 9466 Cutler Road.
Anyone involved in the crash can be picked up at the church after giving their information to state police.
