On Saturday, September 10, the WGPR Historical Society held its annual Enduring Legacy Gala at The ICON building on the Detroit Riverfront near Belle Isle. The event is a celebration of black media heritage by the nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the first black-owned television station in the continental United States, WGPR-TV. The event raised funds for the expansion of the William W. Banks Museum of Broadcasting and Media Center and featured special guest Stephen A. Smith, ESPN sports commentator and media personality. The society presented its first Indestructible Legacy Awards to four Detroiters who have promoted diversity, equity and inclusion over the course of their careers: Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan; Detroit Pistons Vice Chairman Arn Tellem; Greg Kelser, former NBA player and current television color commentator for the Detroit Pistons; and Emir Makupson, former anchor for WGPR, WKBD and WWJ. A posthumous award will be presented to the family of WGPR founder William W. Banks. // Photos by Patrick Gloria
